Second Son Woodworks generally does not purchase freshly felled residential trees or logs. We offer paid milling services for clients who wish to retain their lumber and occasionally accept suitable logs for salvage at no cost.

At Second Son Woodworks, we take pride in transforming locally sourced trees—especially those that have naturally reached the end of their life cycle—into one-of-a-kind furniture and usable lumber.
Each tree holds a story. Rather than seeing a beautiful tree reduced to wood chips or firewood, there can be an opportunity to preserve its character and give it a new life.
Through our tree milling service, we can work with clients who want to preserve a meaningful tree from their property and eventually transform it into custom furniture. Depending on the tree, location, and project, we can mill logs into slabs or lumber and help guide the material through the drying process before it is ready for woodworking.
Turning a tree into furniture is a long process. Freshly cut wood must be milled, treated, properly stacked and dried before it can be used for furniture. Depending on the species and thickness of the lumber, this process can take considerable time. The result, however, can be a truly unique heritage piece carrying the history of the tree and the property it came from.
If you have a fallen or recently removed tree that has sentimental value—or simply believe it deserves an opportunity to become something more than firewood or wood chips—we'd be happy to discuss whether it is a good candidate for milling.
Have a Tree You'd Like to Turn Into Lumber?
There are two primary ways Second Son Woodworks works with locally felled trees and logs:
1. You would like to keep the lumber
We may be able to mill and process your tree as a paid service. The resulting lumber remains yours and can eventually be used for your own furniture or woodworking project.
Pricing depends on the species, dimensions, accessibility, transportation requirements, milling requirements, and other circumstances surrounding the tree.
2. You no longer want the logs and would like them salvaged
We occasionally accept suitable logs at no cost to Second Son Woodworks for use in future woodworking projects. This can provide an alternative to chipping, burning, or disposing of a tree that may contain beautiful usable lumber.
***In some cases, your tree service may also be able to reduce its removal cost if suitable trunk sections can be left intact for milling rather than cut into smaller pieces for chipping or disposal.***
Acceptance is determined on a case-by-case basis. Not every tree or log is suitable for milling, and we are unable to accept all offered material.

A raw log is very different from finished, kiln-dried lumber. Considerable expense, labor, time, and risk are required to transport, handle, mill, treat, stack, dry, store, and ultimately process a log into usable furniture-grade material. Depending on the species and dimensions, that process can take years, and not all of the resulting wood may ultimately be usable.
